Introducing Boulder Headshots at Our New Studio
A few months ago I got the keys to our new Boulder photo studio, and I’ve been building it out to be photo-ready ever since. Painting, building furniture, setting up gear and getting our kitchenette stocked with shoot snacks and drinks.
One of the things I’m most excited about is having a space where we can regularly offer approachable, professional headshot sessions, in addition to our commercial, product and brand shoots.
Our Headshot Days are all about professional portraits that feel authentic, polished and modern. I believe everyone should have a real headshot they love that actually feels like them. Never stuffy, awkward or old-school.
What exactly is a Headshot Day?
We first started Headshot Days years ago when Putnam Creative was based in the Bay Area, and we’re excited to bring them to Boulder!
While much of our work at Putnam Creative is focused on commercial, product and brand shoots, we’re passionate about the people behind the work having a great photo too. (AKA stop hiding behind all of the amazing work you’re doing.)
We created this process and refined it over the years to make it as streamlined, efficient and comfortable as possible. You snag an open spot online, show up for a private 25-minute shoot in our photo studio and we’ll guide you through each step of the process. What to do with your hands, where to look, how to pose.
After the shoot, you’ll have dozens of images to choose from and can select your favorites for final retouching, so you walk away with a few polished shots that feel 100% you.
I hate having my photo taken. And what do I do with my hands?
I hear this all the time, and I get it! Most of our headshot clients aren’t used to being in front of the camera and still walk away with photos they feel amazing in.
I’ve been shooting portraits for over a decade and prioritize creating a comfortable, supportive environment. I’ll pour you your favorite beverage (bubbly, Diet Coke, hot tea, you name it), help you finalize which outfits to wear, then we’ll put on a good playlist and I’ll guide you through posing, expressions and, yes, what to do with your hands.
What should I wear for professional headshots?
For Headshot Day, we’ll capture your photos in a couple of different looks. Here are my two top recommendations for preparing:
1. Wear the pieces you wear all the time.
They may not feel like the most exciting choice, but you wear them all the time for a reason. They’re comfortable, they fit well and they feel true to your style. If you feel inspired to pick up a few new pieces, we definitely won’t stop you, but often your most-worn pieces are perfect. Plus, when you see the photos, you’ll actually feel like yourself.
2. Plan for one slightly more casual outfit and one slightly more polished outfit.
This totally varies by person and industry. I recommend bringing one day-to-day work outfit, something you’d wear for a casual coffee meeting (maybeee not your WFH sweats), then something you’d wear to an industry event or while presenting on stage.
For some, that’s a t-shirt. For others, it’s a suit, sequins, fringe or cowboy boots. You do you. Having a little variety between casual and polished will give you options for different uses: speaker bios, your About page, social media, LinkedIn, you name it.
When you book your shoot, we’ll send over our full portrait preparation guide with plenty of tips for getting ready for shoot day, outfits included. We also work with some talented local hair and makeup artists and wardrobe stylists if you’d like to add some extra support to feel your best on camera.

Our Headshot Days are designed for efficient headshot sessions for individuals, but we love working with co-founders and teams too!
We can host a dedicated Headshot Day in the Boulder studio for your full team, or provide your company or organization with a private booking code so team members can schedule and pop in for their own studio sessions on a date and time that works for them.
We also offer on-location headshots for Colorado teams at your Boulder office, offsite or event, plus locations in Denver and around the Front Range. We can bring the studio to you and capture group photos and additional marketing content while we’re already there with camera in hand.
